Aqua Transitional Living Room

BEFORE

AFTER

I'm so excited to share this recent project with you!  This formal living room is a fun blend of traditional and contemporary pieces.  It opens right off of the foyer and is really the jewel box of this home.
When I arrived, it was color coordinated and very symetrical.  It was not an ugly room.  But it fell flat.  The primary issue I wanted to address was the lighting.  The overhead flush mount amber fixture gave off such a bad light, it was better left off!  The lamps were not only underscaled for the room, they also had blue lined shades and the walls were lemon yellow.  And what happens when you mix blue and yellow?  That's right.  Green!  The second issue was the underscale of the rug and most of the accessories in the room.  And lastly, the beige tinted celing clashed with the lemony walls.
So I started with the feature wall and found some amazing wallpaper that coordinated beautifully with aqua and gold curtains the homeowner already had and wanted to use.  I chose a wall color that complemented both the ceiling and the wallpaper.  Then I chose fabrics for the sofa pillows to complement the wallpaper as well as connect to the blue walls in the dining room right across from the living room.  The small floral fabric is a little traditional connecting to the very traditional regency chairs. The blue center pillow adds texture without more pattern.  And the zebra fabric really pushes the contemporary side the homeowner was attracted to!  A larger, but neutral rug and the addition of the blue ottoman brings all the furniture into the conversation.  Larger metallic lamps highlight the metallic in the wallpaper.  A chandelier that was too small in the dining room works perfectly in this room.  Bringing a silver chest from another room adds weight to the other large wall as well as another contemporary piece. And a skinny but tall silver mirror reflects the light with style.
I was glad the homeowner took a risk with the wallpaper and fabrics.  I really love how it all came together!

Why Use an Interior Designer?

The interior design world has become so much more accessible in the last decade.  Well-known designers have products for sale at KMart, Target, and WalMart.  HGTV is a wealth of information and ideas.  I even read an article that stated approximately 68% of homeowners peruse Houzz.com before starting a renovation project.  So with all the design world available to you, why would you need me?  I'll give you 5 good reasons why!

1.  It's not business, it's personal!
Have you ever gathered a hundred good ideas and then felt stuck and even more confused because you can't decide which option would be best?  That's where it gets personal.  A designer looks at the WHOLE picture.  YOUR picture. Form AND function.  She can look at your space and suggest a complete design plan to cover all your wants and needs.  I find this is particualrly helpful in designing offices, which are spaces that need to have asthetic appeal to inspire you but also be a major work horse!

2.  A Fresh Perspective
I have had more than one client that called me in for a consultation only.  My very first client was like this.  After I left her with furniture arrangement ideas and paint swatches, she invited me back over few weeks later and her whole house had changed!   It was so full of color where before it was all beige.  She started with just a few of my suggestions and it sparked her own creativity and confidence!  Her house has remained one of my favorites to have worked on because I saw her come to life in a new way.

3.  Save money and time!
I am always looking for a good value.  My clients do save money on goods because I pass along my designer discounts to them.  They never pay more than retail.  I am always looking for a good value.  My clients don't waste time looking for a good crew because I have a source of tradesmen that do quality work.  My clients save money and time on costly mistakes.  A designer brings you the whole plan from the beginning so you don't waste time redoing!

4.  Wow Factor
There's a pretty room and then there's a beautiful room.  The beautiful room is full of smart ideas to make everyday living prettier or more luxurious.  The beautiful room has personality and hopefully a sense of humor.  The beautiful room is noticed by friends and family when they come to visit as being special.  When you hire a designer she will take your room to the next level.  You get the wow factor!

5.  Symbiotic Relationship
I've listed several ways a designer can be beneficial to you.  But did you know that our clients are beneficial to us too?  God has given me a talent in decorating.  When I look at it, it can seem like a very unneccessary talent in the grand scheme of things.  Which is why I am overjoyed when a new client chooses to invest in me!  When you hire me, you help support my family and all the families of the trades you hire.  Not only do you offer me a way to make a living but also an outlet to express all the creativity I have!  My clients hold a very specail place in my heart.  :-)

Creation of beauty

Been loving this quote by Ralph Waldo Emerson lately.

"Love of beauty is taste.  Creation of beauty is ART."

I love what I do!  I love that I get to work with beautiful things every day and make it into art.  This is a picture of several pieces accumulating at my house getting ready to install in a beautiful home soon. Can't wait to show you the finished product!

Back to Work!

Hi Everyone,

After several years focused as a stay at home mom, I am excited to be back to work doing what I love!  And what a treat it was to restart my career working on an entire home to be shown in our neighborhood Holiday Tour of Homes!  I nicknamed it "Mission Impossible" (and even set my client's ringtone to the theme song) because we only had a 6 week timeline to accomplish this task!

I like timelines.  They help me stay motivated.  But considering how close we were to the holidays, it was daunting to find an upholsterer, a drapery seamstress, a painter, and an electrician that could squeeze a big project into their schedules!  This is where I confirmed that God gave me this ability and He confirmed that He wanted me to use it.  Because He provided all of these wonderful trades!!

I thoroughly enjoyed working on this house.  Design work is very therapeutic for me.  Being creative releases my happy hormones!  And it felt good to be someone other than "Mom" for a few hours a day.  But I especially enjoyed making new relationships.  The clients have become dear friends now!

I hope you enjoy the photo tour!  And please keep me in mind if you need help with your own home!  I offer design packages to out of town clients and full service consultations and designs to clients in the Marietta, GA area!  I'm looking forward to the next project!

Much love,
Claire
